What’s this newsletter about?

This is where I share quick, informal thoughts on macroeconomics and monetary policy. The focus is on current developments—especially central bank decisions and inflation dynamics—with the occasional broader reflection.

Since I’m based in Switzerland, I often cover Swiss topics, but I follow global developments closely. I post weekly.

I am Chief Economist at EFG Bank, where I also publish more formal commentary at efginternational.com. Here you find my personal views, not those of my employer. Previously, I served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland (2011–2015) and taught economics at Goethe University in Frankfurt, where I also led the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability.

Earlier in my career, I worked at the BIS (as Secretary to the CGFS), at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (as Chief Economist), and served on various policy and advisory bodies, including the European Parliament’s Monetary Experts Panel. I started out in academia in the US and hold a doctorate from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

I have published around 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking.

If this sounds interesting, I hope you’ll subscribe. It is free, and new posts will land directly in your inbox.
